RetroThing

Retro thing is an independent vintage gadget website run by a team of renegade elves based in Calgary and Chicago. Each month we present a never-ending stream of classic and almost-classic gizmos and books. OK, so I made up the bit about the team of elves. Everything else is true, though.

The DC Universe Classics

The creation of the DC Universe Classics Info Archive (DCUC.info) was inspired a great deal by the Super Powers and Total Justice archives, which were built by Jason Geyer (more popularly known on the net as ToyOtter). Both archives were put up sometime in the late 90s and to date, still serve as a “de facto” guide for people who are just beginning to appreciate those classic lines. DCUC.info is intended to be a similar guide (both visual and informational) for the new Mattel DCUC action figure line. New photos and information will be added as we gather them from various sources. It is my hope that this site will serve the same purpose and exhibit the same longevity as Jason’s.

FiringSquad

Welcome to FiringSquad, one of the Internet's largest and most-recognized Hardware and Gaming sites. We first started FiringSquad in order to help gamers get the most out of their PCs. The First Person Shooter was enjoying a renaissance and PC gaming was burgeoning. Hardware really started to matter, and the industry was fragmented with multiple players peddling competitive products. Existing sites just didn't cater to hardcore enthusiasts, preferring instead to stay focused on the more lucrative markets hardware IT or mainstream gaming.

From the start, we set out to expose the curious world of the hardcore gamer. The fastest hardware, mouse/keyboard input, mouse sampling, high video framerates, stereo sound with headphones, even monitor refresh (to this day there are people who claim no advantage can be had with a higher refresh). In addition, the explosion of PC gaming brought with it a wave of multiplayer games, growing the phenomenon of competitve play. Reviews that simply covered single-player campaigns only told half the story.

As gaming grew, so did FiringSquad. With more people playing, the definition of "hardcore" shifted, and those of us not blessed with unlimited budgets needed to find the best bang for the buck. Brutal CPU price wars have brought component prices to a level previously-unimaginable in the industry. The effect of competitive gaming spread as well, to new genres of games and even new platforms.

Today, FiringSquad continues to bring you the absolute latest in the world of PC technology, hardware, and the games that take advantage of them. In these pages you'll find the rigorous and unbiased reviews and previews, technology guides, and up-to-date events coverage that you've come to expect from FS. Our roots have always been in hardcore gaming, and we believe that these gamers will be the ones to shape the communities, competitions, and industries of tomorrow.

The Awesomer

The Awesomer is a daily blog filled with awesome stuff for guys*. Initially conceptualized as a technology shopping blog, it’s now more or less a massive repository for whatever we find interesting. We’re like that closet that you throw everything into, albeit a bit more organized, and minus the ratty tee you’ve worn since freshman year.

In short, The Awesomer samples a bit of everything–from gadgets to news, from clothing to video games. The more interesting/funky/goofy, the better.

TechnoBuffalo

TechnoBuffalo was created to be the ultimate website for tech enthusiasts.  To accomplish that we’ve built an immersive tech-focused environment composed of three segments: original content, social networking, and a blogging platform.

The content on the main site is created by a team of professional writers that are self-proclaimed tech-enthusiasts. Articles will cover a breadth of technology-related issues and topics. In order to breathe life into our content, we will be making frequent use of video to supplement our text content.  Posts on TechnoBuffalo will not be simple rehashes of news found on other sites.  Each article will provide value to the reader through editorial commentary, descriptive ‘how-to’ guides, and immersive video.

Tech-heads like to compare notes and share opinions on the latest and greatest gadgets, so we built our own social network. BuffaloNet allows our users to create and manage their own profiles, show off their gear, and interact with other users through our built in instant messaging client, profile comments, or integrated email.  We are not aiming to replace any of the larger social networks, in fact, BuffaloNet will compliment them.  BuffaloNet offers the anonymity to meet new people and discuss technology without revealing personal information found on traditional social networks.

At its core, TechnoBuffalo is about experiencing technology, which includes sharing views and opinions with others. Because we want to give the community a voice and encourage others to become tech reviewers, TechnoBuffalo gives users the option to create their own technology blog with a custom URL (TechnoBuffalo.com/username) complete with full WordPress content management. Users can add writers, and customize the layout of their tech blogs.  In addition, we give users the ability to utilize the top advertising space so that they are rewarded monetarily for creating great content and driving traffic.  To encourage users to use their sub blogs, we offer a library of training videos that teach them how to effectively run a tech blog. Videos include tutorials on how to find items to review, how to act confident in front of a camera, and more. Finally, we will feature noteworthy content from the user blogs on the front page of TechnoBuffalo, granting our most active users some well-deserved exposure.  While we encourage our audience to utilize our sub blog system for technology related content, they are free to use the space for anything they choose.  The only restriction is that be appropriate for all ages.

Zath

Zath - Our primary aim is to get the best out of hi-tech gadgets and the technology that is available to us which also includes finding the best quality gaming that we can – who has the time to waste on technology products/services and games which are just not worth your while?

I’m Simon Barker (otherwise know as Zath) and I’m someone who has always liked to embrace technology and tries to fully utilise it to get all the benefits that I can, be it in terms of:

    * General computing technology and getting the best from what the Internet has to offer from a technological point of view, be it Web 2.0 services, software or entertainment, much of which are provided free to us internet users.
    * Hi-tech gadgets, such as mobile phones and their associated functionality – I currently have an iPhone 3GS handset which is essentially a pocket computer, I can check emails, browse the web to get information I need wherever I am and use the built-in GPS to find my way around new places – the future for mobile platforms is one that holds a lot of possibilities for all of us.
    * Gaming is also developing at great speed, be it from a technical point of view in terms of graphics, physics, gaming engine or utilising new technologies to create new gaming styles as we’ve witnessed with the Nintendo Wii.
